AINEVA Course – Make your Track
Advanced risk management course on snow-covered terrain.
Are you a ski tourer with years of experience, passionate about snow science, and do you want to deepen your knowledge of risk management?
Do you often find yourself being the reference point for a group of ski tourers and would you like to acquire additional tools to manage the group in a snow-covered mountain environment?
This course will help you consolidate your snow science knowledge and provide you with tools to plan and lead a ski touring outing with good risk management.

DIFFICULTY LEVELS
The system uses two distinct parameters for each itinerary:
- Technical difficulty
- Physical difficulty (Fitness)
Both are divided into three levels: Low – Medium – High.
ALPINE TERRAIN
Low technical difficulty
Itinerary on rocky and/or snowy terrain, generally not very steep. May include short stretches on snow slopes up to 35°–40° and simple rock passages up to UIAA grade II.
Medium technical difficulty
More complex and exposed terrain. Requires good movement skills on snow and ice up to 45° and rock passages up to UIAA grade IV.
High technical difficulty
Very complex and exposed terrain. Requires solid experience on snow and ice slopes beyond 45°, possible use of two ice axes, and rock passages above UIAA grade IV.
Low physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 400–500 m. Approximate activity time: 3–4 hours.
Medium physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 800–1,000 m. Approximate activity time: 5–7 hours.
High physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 1,400–1,800 m.
SKI MOUNTAINEERING TERRAIN
Low technical difficulty
Requires the ability to ski with parallel turns on black runs. No specific ski mountaineering or off-piste experience required.
Medium technical difficulty
Requires prior ski mountaineering and/or off-piste experience. Ability to ski in a controlled manner on all snow types on slopes up to 35°.
High technical difficulty
Requires full ski control on all snow types on slopes steeper than 35°. May include alpine sections requiring the use of ice axe and crampons.
Low physical difficulty
Trips with elevation gain under 800 m.
Medium physical difficulty
Trips with elevation gain between 800 and 1,200 m.
High physical difficulty
Trips with elevation gain over 1,200 m.

Description
The AINEVA “Make the Track” Course is an advanced snow and avalanche training course aimed at ski touring enthusiasts who want to deepen all aspects of avalanche risk management in their practice.
During the training, the focus will be on accurate tour planning, group management and decision-making in a snow-covered mountain environment.
Course structure
Detailed Program
Friday evening (20:00 – 22:00)
Course introduction and review of snow science.
Saturday
Field practice and afternoon classroom theory session.
Sunday
Practical outing applying the knowledge acquired.
Dates: March 7–8, 2026
Location: Outings in the Aosta Valley, depending on snow and weather conditions.

Practical outing with application of the knowledge acquired.
The outings take place in Aosta Valley; the specific location will be chosen according to snow and weather conditions.
Prerequisites
Participants must have attended the “Follow the Track” course or acquired equivalent knowledge: knowing the fundamentals of snow and avalanches, being able to read a map and perform a simple avalanche victim search.
A self-assessment test is planned to verify suitability for participation.

Training objectives
Acquire good practices for leading an outing with proper risk management
Plan an outing in detail
Identify the critical points of the outing on the map and in the field
Recognise typical avalanche situations on the terrain
Interpret the avalanche bulletin in depth
Consider human factors in decision-making
Communicate with the group to share decisions and ensure instructions are applied
Use methods and tools for risk reduction
Set a track in a safe and comfortable way
