Dent du Géant Stage – Four Days of Mountaineering in the Mont Blanc Massif

Dent du Géant is one of the most recognisable peaks in the Mont Blanc massif: a granite spire rising above the Géant Glacier and dominating the Col du Géant, already visible during the ascent with Skyway Monte Bianco.

The ascent combines glacier approach, high-altitude terrain and exposed rock climbing along an elegant and very distinctive line. The technical difficulties are concentrated in the final part of the route, where progression also takes place with the help of the fixed ropes installed along the normal route.

This stage allows you to experience Dent du Géant as part of a more complete mountaineering program in the Mont Blanc massif. In the days before the final ascent, the program includes rock climbing, glacier travel and high-altitude ridges, with the traverses of the Aiguilles Marbrées and Aiguille d’Entrèves.

The aim is not simply to offer a technical approach to the summit, but to build four complete and varied mountaineering days in one of the most spectacular settings in the Alps. Dent du Géant is the natural conclusion of the program, if conditions, weather, route feasibility and the participant’s level allow the ascent.

The program may be modified according to weather, mountain conditions, logistics and the participant’s technical level.

Day 1 – Rock climbing

The first day is dedicated to rock climbing, either at a climbing crag or on a multipitch route chosen according to the participant’s experience.

During the day, the work will focus on climbing with mountaineering boots, rope use, belay stances and abseiling techniques: useful elements for approaching the following days more effectively.

Overnight stay in accommodation in the valley.

Day 2 – Aiguilles Marbrées traverse

Ascent with Skyway Monte Bianco to Punta Helbronner and access to the Géant Glacier.

The Aiguilles Marbrées traverse offers a varied and panoramic ridge, alternating glacier progression, rock and short exposed sections. It is an ideal day to become more familiar with high-altitude terrain and rope-team progression in the Mont Blanc massif.

At the end of the traverse, overnight stay at the Torino Hut.

Day 3 – Aiguille d’Entrèves traverse

From the Torino Hut, the route reaches the Aiguille d’Entrèves, one of the most elegant and characteristic ridge traverses in the area.

The itinerary alternates rock passages and mixed terrain, with exposed sections requiring good movement skills and concentration. The day consolidates the experience gained the previous day on more continuous and demanding terrain.

Return and second overnight stay at the Torino Hut.

Day 4 – Ascent of Dent du Géant

Morning departure from the Torino Hut towards Dent du Géant.

After the glacier approach and high-altitude terrain, the route reaches the base of the Gengiva. From here begins the technical part of the ascent, with progression on mixed and rocky terrain. The Gengiva ends at the base of the impressive south face of Dent du Géant. From this point, the ascent follows the normal route, with exposed climbing and sections assisted by the fixed ropes present on the itinerary.

The summit of Dent du Géant, at 4,014 metres, offers an exceptional position in the heart of the Mont Blanc massif.

The descent is made through a series of abseils leading back to the base of the Dent du Géant, and then down along the Gengiva. Return to the valley with Skyway Monte Bianco.

Program note

The program described is a reference structure. Itineraries, daily plans and objectives may be modified according to weather, mountain conditions, hut availability, logistics and the participant’s level.

The ascent of Dent du Géant cannot be guaranteed. In case of unsuitable conditions or insufficient level to attempt the ascent, the program may be modified with alternative activities consistent with the technical goals of the stage.

Any changes will always be discussed with the participant before being applied.

This stage is designed for people with previous mountaineering experience who want to face four consecutive days at altitude, with progression on glacier terrain, exposed ridges and rock climbing.

Required experience:

• previous mountaineering experience;
• confidence using crampons and ice axe;
• experience climbing on rock and moving on exposed terrain;
• ability to move on glacier and mixed terrain;
• familiarity with abseiling;
• ability to handle consecutive days at altitude;
• good physical fitness.

Before confirming the program, the participant’s experience will be assessed through a technical questionnaire and, if necessary, a direct discussion with the Mountain Guide.
