Selvaggio Blu – The Most Spectacular Trek in the Mediterranean

Selvaggio Blu crosses one of the most spectacular and remote coastal sections of eastern Sardinia. The itinerary develops through the Supramonte di Baunei, among limestone walls, wind-shaped junipers, ancient shepherds’ passages, suspended ledges and continuous views of the sea.

It is a particular route, difficult to classify as a simple trek. The stages alternate walking on rough terrain, short climbing passages, exposed sections, abseils and navigation in an often isolated environment. The beauty of the itinerary comes precisely from this combination: not simply walking along the coast, but crossing a complex, wild territory deeply linked to the pastoral history of the Supramonte.

The journey requires adaptability and an essential approach. The days can be long, the terrain is not always comfortable and logistics are part of the experience: water, equipment, bivouacs and transfers are carefully organised, adapting to the conditions of the moment.

Accompanied by an IFMGA Mountain Guide, participants can experience Selvaggio Blu with professional technical management of the most delicate sections: rock passages, abseils and navigation. The aim is to live an intense and authentic journey in one of the most fascinating environments in the Mediterranean.

The program described is a reference structure and may be modified according to weather, route conditions, logistics, group level and supply organisation.

Day 1 – Arrival and briefing

Meeting in the afternoon in Santa Maria Navarrese at the accommodation planned for the program.

Meeting with the Mountain Guide, introduction of the participants, technical briefing on equipment, logistics, stages, supplies and group management.

Transfers to/from the airport or port available on request.

Overnight stay in a B&B or accommodation facility.

Day 2 – Santa Maria Navarrese → Ovile Us Piggius

Indicative stage: 10 km – approx. 5 hours – D+ 850 m

The first trekking day allows the group to progressively enter the Selvaggio Blu environment. After leaving Santa Maria Navarrese, the itinerary reaches the Pedra Longa area and continues towards Ovile Us Piggius.

The route alternates panoramic sections, rocky terrain and the first passages on little-used trails, with continuous views of the coast.

Typical dinner and overnight stay in a shepherds’ hut.

Day 3 – Ovile Us Piggius → Portu Cuau

Indicative stage: 7.5 km – 6/7 hours – D+ 300 m / D– 800 m

The second stage introduces the first more technical sections of the route, with short climbing passages, exposed sections and more complex terrain.

The day requires attention, sure-footedness and the ability to move continuously on rough terrain. The arrival at Portu Cuau brings the group to one of the most evocative corners of the coast.

Camp and dinner by the sea.

Day 4 – Portu Cuau → Cala Mariolu

Indicative stage: 9.5 km – 6/7 hours – D+ 800 m

The day crosses panoramic traverses, rock passages and easy climbing sections, with constant views of the sea and the limestone walls of the Supramonte.

The itinerary reaches Cala Goloritzè, one of the symbolic places of the Baunei coast. Depending on the chosen logistics, the following section is covered by sea to Cala Mariolu.

Swim, dinner and overnight stay near the beach.

Day 5 – Cala Mariolu → Ololbissi

Indicative stage: 9 km – 7/8 hours – D+ 800 m

This is one of the most demanding days of the journey. The route includes technical rock passages, sections up to grade IV and abseils, always with the assistance of the Mountain Guide.

The terrain requires concentration, exposure management and good adaptability. The environment remains wild, isolated and deeply connected to the nature of the Supramonte.

Camp with possible shower, depending on the planned logistics.

Day 6 – Ololbissi → Cala Sisine

Indicative stage: 8 km – approx. 7 hours – D+ 600 m

The final trekking day of Selvaggio Blu, with easy climbing, sections up to grade IV and abseils.

The route gradually leads towards Cala Sisine, the final point of the trek. Reaching the sea is the natural conclusion of the journey, after days of walking, bivouacs, technical terrain and extraordinary coastal landscapes.

Fish dinner by the sea and overnight stay in a tent in the equipped area of Cala Sisine.

Day 7 – Cala Sisine → Santa Maria Navarrese

Return to Santa Maria Navarrese by inflatable boat or Jeep, depending on sea conditions and planned logistics.

Good physical fitness and experience walking for several consecutive days on varied and often irregular terrain are required, with walking days of 6–8 hours.

The stages can be long, with significant elevation gain, uneven ground, off-trail sections, exposed passages and sections requiring attention and continuity.

It is not necessary to be an experienced climber, but it is important not to suffer from exposure and to be willing to tackle short climbing passages and abseils with the assistance of the Mountain Guide.

The journey is suitable for motivated people, used to outdoor life and able to adapt to essential logistics, where bivouacs, supplies, weather and terrain conditions are part of the experience.

Before confirming the journey, the participants’ experience will be assessed through a questionnaire and, if necessary, a direct discussion with the Mountain Guide.

The final price will be confirmed at the proposal stage, according to the number of participants, planned logistics, availability of facilities and the conditions of the Tour Operator package.

• Any additional costs due to program changes caused by weather, route conditions or logistical needs, agreed in advance with the participants.

Standard multi-day trekking equipment is required, with clothing suitable for warm days, rocky terrain and possible weather changes.

Trekking or approach shoes with good grip, a comfortable backpack, water bottle or hydration bladder, headlamp, sleeping bag liner or bivouac equipment required by the logistics, sun protection, hat, windproof jacket and light but durable clothing are essential.

For the technical passages, harness, helmet, lanyard and descender are required. Availability or rental of technical equipment will be confirmed during the booking process.

The program described is a proposed itinerary and may be modified according to the needs of the participants, the level of the group, weather conditions, transfer logistics, availability of support points and the overall management of the journey.

Stages, overnight stays, supplies and some sections of the itinerary may be adapted according to the conditions of the moment and the local organisation.

Any changes will always be discussed with the participants before being applied.

Accommodation and logistics

Selvaggio Blu requires specific organisation of transport, equipment and supplies. Overnight stays take place in simple facilities, bivouacs, shepherds’ huts or equipped areas along the route, depending on the chosen variant and the organisation of the journey.

The management of water, food supplies, personal equipment and logistics along the route is entrusted to a specialised local agency, which manages sea-based supplies and the return transfer from Cala Sisine to Santa Maria Navarrese.

The experience keeps an authentic and adventurous spirit: you often sleep immersed in nature, sometimes under an extraordinary starry sky, experiencing the territory in a direct and essential way. A degree of adaptability and collaboration makes the journey even more engaging and memorable.
