Description

Aosta is a privileged base for ski touring in Aosta Valley with great freedom. In less than one hour by car, it is possible to reach very different valleys and mountain groups: the Mont Blanc area, Valgrisenche, Val di Rhêmes, Valsavarenche, Cogne, Valpelline, the Great Saint Bernard Valley and the valleys of Monte Rosa.

Each day is built according to the conditions of the moment, choosing the most suitable area and itinerary each time. This flexibility makes it possible not to be tied to a single valley, but to move where snow, weather and terrain offer the best possibilities.

The program is designed for intermediate ski tourers who want to discover Aosta Valley through varied experiences, with the freedom to adapt the trip to real conditions and the possibility to deepen, along the way, some aspects of ski touring practice.

Program

Day 1 – Meeting and first outing

Meeting in Aosta, equipment check and brief discussion of the current snow and weather conditions.

Then first ski touring outing in one of the areas best suited to the conditions of the day.

Following days – Ski touring in different areas of Aosta Valley

Each day will be defined according to snow, weather, terrain conditions and group level, choosing each time among the different areas reachable from Aosta.

The program may take place in the Mont Blanc area, Valgrisenche, Val di Rhêmes, Valsavarenche, Cogne, Valpelline, the Great Saint Bernard Valley or the valleys of Monte Rosa.

During the days, some aspects of ski touring practice may be addressed naturally and in connection with the activity: terrain reading, route choice, ascent and descent techniques on variable snow, observation of snow conditions and management of a possible avalanche emergency.

Prerequisites

Basic/intermediate ski touring experience, good ability to ski down variable snow and experience with days involving indicative elevation gains of up to 1,200 metres are required.

Familiarity with the use of avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, and with the main avalanche self-rescue procedures, is recommended.
