Ski & Sail Lyngen – Ski Touring by Sailing Boat from Tromsø

A week of ski touring around the Lyngen Alps, sailing from Tromsø among fjords, islands and mountains of Northern Norway.

A week of ski touring around the Lyngen Alps, sailing from Tromsø among fjords, islands and mountains of Northern Norway.

The boat makes it possible to reach slopes that are often much less frequented than the classic road-accessed areas. Each day, the most suitable outing is chosen according to snow, weather and sea conditions, with ascents generally between 800 and 1,200 metres of elevation gain and descents reaching down to sea level.

No sailing experience is required: navigation is part of the trip and, for those who wish, it offers an opportunity to learn the basics of sailing in an extraordinary setting.

DIFFICULTY LEVELS

The system uses two distinct parameters for each itinerary:

  • Technical difficulty
  • Physical difficulty (Fitness)

Both are divided into three levels: Low – Medium – High.

ALPINE TERRAIN

Low technical difficulty
Itinerary on rocky and/or snowy terrain, generally not very steep. May include short stretches on snow slopes up to 35°–40° and simple rock passages up to UIAA grade II.

Medium technical difficulty
More complex and exposed terrain. Requires good movement skills on snow and ice up to 45° and rock passages up to UIAA grade IV.

High technical difficulty
Very complex and exposed terrain. Requires solid experience on snow and ice slopes beyond 45°, possible use of two ice axes, and rock passages above UIAA grade IV.

Low physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 400–500 m. Approximate activity time: 3–4 hours.

Medium physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 800–1,000 m. Approximate activity time: 5–7 hours.

High physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 1,400–1,800 m.

SKI MOUNTAINEERING TERRAIN

Low technical difficulty
Requires the ability to ski with parallel turns on black runs. No specific ski mountaineering or off-piste experience required.

Medium technical difficulty
Requires prior ski mountaineering and/or off-piste experience. Ability to ski in a controlled manner on all snow types on slopes up to 35°.

High technical difficulty
Requires full ski control on all snow types on slopes steeper than 35°. May include alpine sections requiring the use of ice axe and crampons.

Low physical difficulty
Trips with elevation gain under 800 m.

Medium physical difficulty
Trips with elevation gain between 800 and 1,200 m.

Description

The Ski & Sail formula makes it possible to experience ski touring in Northern Norway in a different way from a classic land-based trip. Sailing from Tromsø, the boat becomes the mobile base for the week and allows access to fjords, islands and slopes often less frequented than itineraries directly accessible by road.

The tour develops around the Lyngen Alps area, which remains one of the most spectacular visual references of the trip: elegant mountains, deep fjords and coastal lines that accompany many of the sailing sections. The value of the journey lies above all in the mobility of the boat and in the possibility of choosing the most suitable sector each day.

Each day is built according to snow, weather and sea conditions. The aim is not to follow a rigid program, but to choose each time the itinerary best suited to the group and the conditions, alternating ascents on coastal mountains, descents towards the fjords and sailing between one area and another.

The trip requires good ski touring experience and the ability to handle variable days, both physically and logistically. The ascents generally involve between 800 and 1,200 metres of elevation gain per day, but the program is always adapted to the level of the group, snow and weather conditions and the overall management of the trip.

Program

Day 1 – Arrival in Tromsø and boarding

Arrival in Tromsø, meeting with the Mountain Guide and the skipper, accommodation on board and initial briefing on the week’s program, life on board and the organisation of the days.

Days 2–6 – Ski touring and sailing around the Lyngen Alps

Five days dedicated to ski touring and sailing among fjords, islands and mountains of Northern Norway.

Each day, the program is defined according to snow, weather and sea conditions, choosing the itinerary best suited to the group. The days alternate ski ascents, descents towards the sea and sailing towards new areas.

Day 7 – Last outing and return to Tromsø

Last ski touring outing, if compatible with conditions and logistics, and return sailing towards Tromsø.

Disembarkation and conclusion of the trip.

Prerequisites

Good ski touring experience and autonomy in ascent and descent techniques are required.

The days may vary both in terms of snow and weather conditions and sailing logistics, with indicative elevation gains generally between 800 and 1,200 metres.

The trip is not designed for those approaching ski touring for the first time. Previous sailing experience is not required: navigation will be an integral part of the experience and the skipper may introduce participants to the basics of sailing, depending on conditions and logistics.

It is important to have good adaptability, to be used to days in a winter environment and to accept that the program is built day by day according to conditions, group level and the overall management of the trip.

More info

Accommodation and life on board

During the trip, the sailing boat is the main base for the week: participants sleep on board in shared cabins and live in an essential, dynamic environment closely connected to sea conditions and sailing logistics.

Life on board requires adaptability, cooperation and willingness to share small spaces. Main meals are prepared on board and daily management is organised together with the skipper and the Mountain Guide, according to movements, conditions and the ski touring program.

Operational notes

The program indicated should be considered indicative. Ski touring days and boat movements will be adapted according to snow, weather and sea conditions, group level and the joint assessments of the Mountain Guide and skipper.

The mobility of the boat makes it possible to choose the most suitable sector each day, but it also requires flexibility: schedules, itineraries and sailing sections may vary during the week in order to keep the trip consistent with the real conditions.

Alpine World manages the technical part related to ski touring and mountain guiding with an IFMGA Mountain Guide, within the package organised through a partner Tour Operator.
