Spring High-Altitude Ski Touring – Flexible Hut-to-Hut Tour

Four days of high-altitude ski touring, with overnight stays in mountain huts and an itinerary built according to conditions and personal preferences.

A multi-day ski touring program designed for the spring season, when the opening of mountain huts and the greater stability of the snowpack make it possible to fully experience high-altitude ski touring. The itinerary is defined each time, choosing between traverses, loops or different ascents according to conditions, group level and the type of experience desired.

DIFFICULTY LEVELS

The system uses two distinct parameters for each itinerary:

  • Technical difficulty
  • Physical difficulty (Fitness)

Both are divided into three levels: Low – Medium – High.

ALPINE TERRAIN

Low technical difficulty
Itinerary on rocky and/or snowy terrain, generally not very steep. May include short stretches on snow slopes up to 35°–40° and simple rock passages up to UIAA grade II.

Medium technical difficulty
More complex and exposed terrain. Requires good movement skills on snow and ice up to 45° and rock passages up to UIAA grade IV.

High technical difficulty
Very complex and exposed terrain. Requires solid experience on snow and ice slopes beyond 45°, possible use of two ice axes, and rock passages above UIAA grade IV.

Low physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 400–500 m. Approximate activity time: 3–4 hours.

Medium physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 800–1,000 m. Approximate activity time: 5–7 hours.

High physical difficulty
Daily elevation gain up to 1,400–1,800 m.

SKI MOUNTAINEERING TERRAIN

Low technical difficulty
Requires the ability to ski with parallel turns on black runs. No specific ski mountaineering or off-piste experience required.

Medium technical difficulty
Requires prior ski mountaineering and/or off-piste experience. Ability to ski in a controlled manner on all snow types on slopes up to 35°.

High technical difficulty
Requires full ski control on all snow types on slopes steeper than 35°. May include alpine sections requiring the use of ice axe and crampons.

Description

Spring is the moment when high-altitude ski touring expresses one of its most complete forms: mountain huts reopen, the snowpack tends to stabilise and traverses, loops and ascents requiring several consecutive days become possible.

This tour is designed to experience precisely this season, building the most suitable itinerary each time among some of the most significant areas of Aosta Valley and the Western Alps. Depending on conditions and group preferences, the program may take place among the huts of Gran Paradiso, Val di Rhêmes, Valgrisenche, Valpelline or Monte Rosa.

Flexibility remains central, but within a more continuous and immersive experience than a valley-based program: several days on skis, overnight stays in mountain huts and a progression that allows participants to truly enter the rhythm of spring ski touring at altitude.

Possible tour developments

Depending on conditions and group preferences, the tour may take different forms: a hut-to-hut traverse in the Gran Paradiso massif, a multi-day loop between Val di Rhêmes and Valgrisenche, or a series of high-altitude ascents with overnight stays in mountain huts in the Monte Rosa area.

The final program will be built by choosing, among the different possibilities offered by the season, the option best suited to the group and to the conditions of the moment.

Program

Day 1 – Meeting and approach to the first hut

Meeting with the Guide, equipment check and discussion of current conditions.

Then ascent towards the first mountain hut and start of the tour.

Following days – High-altitude ski touring

The itinerary is defined according to conditions, group level and chosen duration. The program may take different forms: a hut-to-hut traverse, a multi-day loop, or a tour with different ascents each day and returns to successive huts.

During the tour, some specific aspects of spring high-altitude ski touring will be addressed naturally: choosing aspects according to the freeze-thaw cycle, time management, glacier travel when included in the itinerary and route choice.

Prerequisites

Previous ski touring experience, good ability to ski down variable snow and experience with consecutive days involving indicative elevation gains of 1,000–1,200 metres are required.

Good physical fitness and the ability to move in a high-altitude environment are required. Familiarity with the use of avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe, and with the main avalanche self-rescue procedures, is recommended.
